Martyrdom of Sayyida Fatimah az- Zahra

January 17, 2021

Martyrdom of Sayyidah Fāṭimah Az-Zahrā’ – 3rd of Jumādal Ākhirah

According to some narrations, Sayyidah Fāṭimah, the daughter of Prophet Muḥammad (s), lived in this world for 75 days after the death of her father. Other narrations, more widely accepted by the scholars of history, state that she lived for 95 days after his death, meaning that the date of her martyrdom is on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd of Jumādal Ākhirah.

In a ḥadith of Imam aṣ-Ṣādiq (a) it is narrated that Allah has given Fāṭimah nine special names:  Fāṭimah, aṣ-Ṣiddīqah (extremely truthful), al-Mubārakah (blessed), aṭ-Ṭāhirah (pure from defects), az-Zakiyyah (pure in terms of having perfections), ar-Rāḍiyah (pleased with Allah), al-Marḍiyyah (whom Allah is pleased with), al-Muḥaddathah (whom angels speak to), and az-Zahrā’ (radiant).

As for the name Fāṭimah, it comes from the Arabic root فَطَمَ which means to wean or to cut off. The Holy Prophet (s) once said “Surely Fāṭimah was named Fāṭimah because Allah – the Glorified and Exalted – has cut off the one who loves her from the fire”.
